“COSMIC CONSCIOUSNESS: Meditations on the Evolution of the Human Mind” with Cary Bayer
In the late 19th century, a Canadian psychiatrist named Dr. Richard Bucke had a deep spiritual experience that revealed to him that life is eternal, that there’s an inner light, and that love is at the heart of existence. He dubbed the term Cosmic Consciousness and theorized that it was a state of being that humanity was evolving into in much the same way that the perception of color, for example, has evolved for mankind. Moreover, he studied the writings of great teachers, writers, and peers, suggesting that many of mankind’s great men from Jesus and Buddha to Shakespeare and Whitman possessed this cosmic sense. He documents this cosmic sense in many lesser known people of his time, prophesying that more and more people will naturally evolve into this liberated state. In 1901 he published a comprehensive study of his findings in the seminal book Cosmic Consciousness. This talk will draw extensively from this remarkable volume.
Cary Bayer has been teaching about Cosmic Consciousness since the ’70s, first as a teacher of Transcendental Meditation and trainer of its teachers, later as the founder of Higher Self Healing Meditation, and finally as the author of dozens of books, including Walt Whitman: Poet of Enlightenment.

Jane (Janani) Cleary studied under Swami Dayananda Saraswati who conducted an accredited course of study at Sandeepany Sadhanalaya at Mumbai, India, in 1978. She teaches Vedanta classes in affiliation with Arsha Vidya Gurukulam, Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania, and has taught at our lodge for the past twenty-four years. Jane also serves on the Board as Member-at-Large.
There is no charge for any of our programs. We operate entirely by donations to balance giving and receiving and to continue our work of spreading the message of theosophy. All donations are tax deductible under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, section 501(c) (3).
